Take your Lunch to Work Day

With food and gas prices on the rise exponentially, it seems like everyone is looking for ways to cut costs and save money. Even simple changes to your daily routine can make a big difference, like bringing your lunch to work instead of buying out. Considering that purchasing food for lunch can easily cost $10-$15 a day for something as simple as a sandwich, side, and drink at a restaurant or grocer, that adds up to a tidy sum throughout the year. Even at $10 per lunch, that’s $50 a week and $2,600 a year! Compare that with a sandwich, fruit, chips or crackers, and bottle of water brought from home, which would set you back about $6 generously. At that rate, you would save $20 per week and $1040 per year vs. buying lunch out. And just think of all the money you could save by bringing a thermos of coffee or tea instead of visiting the local coffee shop or Starbucks each day.

Aside from being a healthy alternative for your wallet, taking your lunch can be healthier for you and the environment. It’s no secret that fresh fruits, veggies, and home-made meals are better for you than most meals you can purchase at a restaurant, cafeteria, or street vendor. And with the time you’ll save not ordering and waiting for your food, you can go for a walk in a nearby park, run errands, or meet up with friends or coworkers for a picnic. Since you won’t be driving to a nearby restauraunt for lunch, you’ll save on gas and reduce your carbon footprint. By bringing your food in reusable containers carried in a sturdy washable lunch tote, you can also reduce the amount of trash generated by paper and plastic packaging.

So with a only a few minutes in the morning or evening before, packing your lunch can make a positive impact on your bank account, your health, and your environment.

Fighting crime one lunch at a time…

Never fear, Bat-Lunch is here!

Feed your inner superhero as you eat your lunch in eco-friendly style with this reusable Special Edition Lunch Monster™ tote. Harold has donned his insulated bat-suit and is ready to protect you from hunger and keep all your tasty lunch foods safe.

Every Lunch Monster™ measures approximately 10″ x 6″ x 4″ but can vary slightly as they are handmade. They have an eye snap closure and come fully lined with 100% organic cotton. Each has a 4″ x 6″ mouth (they don’t like it when you call it a pocket) that can carry all your non-food items. Lunch Monsters™, like the rest of us, need a bath from time to time. A quick trip into the washing machine, set on cool, and then a run through the dryer, set on low, usually does the trick.

Custom Creatures Crafted for You!

What’s the only thing I love more than making Lunch Monsters, you ask? Creating custom Lunch Monsters, of course! The possibilities are as endless as the imagination. Recently, someone asked me about my process for custom orders and I find that simplicity works best. A buyer will usually come to me with a general idea or theme for their monster, like “cat”. Then, I’ll make a drawing of how I think it would look, share it with the buyer, make any needed adjustments, and give them a price quote. From there, it’s off to the sewing machine!

Here’s a little sampling of custom Harolds that I’ve created:

Fun in the Sun!

Before embarking on our move to the west coast, I took the Harolds out for a last hurrah in Philadelphia to Fairmount Park for a photoshoot with photographer Jessica Notargiacomo. The Lunch Monsters frolicked in the grass, climbed trees, and enjoyed a picnic in the park. Some highlights from the shoot:

Hugs For All!

Brand new from Lunch Monster Land, its Hugging Harold! His arms snap together at the palms, forming a handy carrying strap. Now you can wear your Lunch Monster as a shoulder bag or carry him by the strap on the go. He also easily grabs onto the handle of the fridge, the strap of your day bag, or the arm of your desk chair. Toting your lunch in eco-friendly style just got more convenient!

Look for Hugging Harold in additional colors in the Ones and Zeros Etsy Shop soon!

The Lunch Monster Workshop

Ahh, a studio space with abundant light, nice breezes, and good views! What a world of difference it makes, I feel so much more productive here than in the windowless, sweatbox that was my studio in South Philly. You can see a couple of the fruits of my labor in the above photo, upcoming additions to the Etsy shop: Panda Harold and Bearold the Lunch Monsters. GI Harold (below) made a quick appearance in the shop as a custom order, but I liked him so much he’ll be returning soon.
